The New Boat

We found her at the Sea Scout Base in Stockton, CA. She was moved to a holding yard in Gardena, CA, then to Sunset Aquatic Shipyard in Seal Beach, CA. Eventually, she landed at Harbor Boat Building in Wilmington, CA where the majority of the construction was done.

Construction Begins
<>We acquired a 1989 6-71 Detroit Diesel engine.  Newly rebuilt, it has no new hours.
One of the first projects was to repair the stem.
Construction Sequence

The crew helps build bulkheads. They lay out the mat, apply resin, lay out pre-cut foam panels, then more mat and woven roving and more resin. They then vacuum bag the bulkheads and help place them in the boat.
Construction Sequence

Bulkheads and pilothouse deck in place. The cabin and
wheelhouse begin to take shape.

The crew learned how to arc weld while helping to
build two 300 gallon fuel tanks.

Installing and aligning engine.

Fairing and Sanding, Fairing and Sanding, Fairing and Sanding...

Applying gel coat to decks and filler-primer coat to cabin and wheelhouse.

Unfortunately, the holes for the forward ports were cut wrong. We had
to fill them in and will re-cut them when we are ready to install the ports.

The distance from the forecastle to the top of the cabin is about 24", too much for a step. We molded and installed a step/seat in the front of the cabin.

Oops! When sanding the hull we uncovered a poor repair job on a
hole near the bow on the port side. The repair fell out leaving a hole.
Because of this we had to remove all of the paint from the hull to
check for more potential problems.

At last the sanding is done! The supports for the wheelhouse
are in and we began to gel coat!

Mixing gel coat and spraying hull.

We buffed and waxed the hull and painted the bottom. Notice the shine
on the hull. Also, beware of the vicious yard dog!

Gel coat is finally applied to entire cabin. As soon as the hand rail is finished we will apply another coat of bottom paint, install the propeller and launch!

On Friday, August 8, 2003, we launched the boat.

Installed all of the windows.
Working on doors and getting the engine running.

On January 31, 2004, we moved her to the Sea Scout Base
under her own power. She runs great!

Updates: anchor capstain installed, controls and instrument panel installed, engine operational, electrical panels, parts for mast almost ready to assemble.

Completed mast. Progression shows mast being glassed to base. Finished mast with lights and horn, mast installed.

Our first trip to Catalina Island was a day trip to Avalon on Saturday, October 22, 2005. The boat ran great and everyone had a great time.

Galley under construction.

A few new pictures: Construction finished in forward bunk room, lockers in aft bunk room, new door on the head,  finished galley with hot & cold running water and the skiff we acquired, It needs paint but it floats.
